Tourism Minister Barbara Oteng Gyasi has announced that a domestic tourism agenda will be pushed to help the sector as government eases up restrictions.
The sector has been heavily hit by the Covid-19 pandemic globally and in Ghana as the virus brought world movement to a standstill.
According to the Minister, the sector has lost ¢171 million between March and June 2020 due to the lack of patronage in the sector. Thus, the initiative to promote domestic tourism.
“We don’t anticipate any significant improvements in international travel until the end of this year. So for this year, our target is to improve domestic tourism,” she told the press Thursday presenting new guidelines on how the industry should operate.
“We are working on a programme to improve domestic tourism because our borders are closed and there isn't going to be much incoming international travel during this period,” she added.
“We are going to work hard to push our ‘See Ghana, Wear Ghana, Feel Ghana’ agenda. We believe that Ghanaians will buy into it. Let us travel and see our country and fall in love with our country.
She also appealed to hotels, guest houses and lodges to reduce rates so that Ghanaians can travel within the country better.
“They should also look at adjusting their rates such that it will appeal to the Ghanaians populace to travel and stay in their facilities and help them also generate some income during this difficult period.”
