The two British teenage girls arrested at the Kotoka International Airport on July 2, 2007 for possessing narcotic drugs concealed in laptop bags have been found guilty on both counts of attempted drug trafficking and possessing narcotic drugs without lawful authority.An Accra Fast Track High Court sitting as a juvenile court pronounced the judgment today.The court also requested social services report in accordance with Ghana’s juvenile law. Joy News has learnt that families of the girls and their lawyers plan to appeal the court’s decision.The 16-year-olds from London were arrested, for carrying 6 kilos of cocaine with an estimated value of £300,000. Hearings of the case have been held in camera to protect the identities of the girls.The Press and Political Officer at the British High Commission, Garry Nicoles who witnessed proceedings told Joy News that sentencing was due for December 6.He said Operation Westbridge, the joint UK, Ghana security cooperation against the drugs war was proceeding appropriately and described the verdict as proof that the Ghanaian legal systems, law agents and institutions were working independently of any influences and should demonstrate to all who intend to use the country for illicit activities to kill such dreams.He told Joy News’ Akwasi Sarpong that the Ghanaian legal system was stands for itself and that the British Government would not interfere with the systems notwithstanding who is involved in an illegality.(Play the attached audio to listen to Garry Nicoles.)
