The University of Cape Coast (UCC), hosts of the 28th Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) Games, emerged as overall champions with a dominant performance, claiming a total of 48 medals across multiple sporting disciplines, including basketball, hockey, tennis, netball, volleyball, and athletics (track and field events).

This victory marks a triumphant return for UCC, who last dominated the GUSA Games in 2020 with an impressive 64 medals.

After a subdued performance in 2024, UCC bounced back strongly to secure 18 gold, 14 silver, and 16 bronze medals at the competition, which concluded on Friday, January 18, 2025, at the university's sports complex.

Fielding a formidable contingent of 200 student-athletes across various events, UCC overwhelmed competitors from other universities, clinching gold in women's and men's volleyball, men’s hockey, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s tennis, and women’s netball.

The University of Ghana (UG) finished second in the medal standings, amassing 39 medals comprising 14 gold, 12 silver, and 13 bronze.

They were followed closely by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), which secured third place with 35 medals (13 gold, 13 silver, and 9 bronze).

The University of Education, Winneba (UEW), placed fourth with 36 medals, including 11 gold, 17 silver, and 8 bronze. The University for Development Studies (UDS) followed in fifth place with 6 gold, 8 silver, and 8 bronze medals.

The University of Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) rounded out the top six, achieving an impressive feat with 1 gold and 5 bronze medals.

Notable Performances by New Entrants

Debutants University for Business and Integrated Development Studies (UBIDS) left a strong impression, securing 1 gold and 1 bronze medal. Ghana Communication Technology University (GCTU) also demonstrated their potential by earning 1 bronze medal, along with Akenten Appiah-Menka University of Skills and Entrepreneurial Development (AAMUSTED).

Universities Without Medals

Some universities, including the University of Media, Arts and Communication (UniMAC), Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration (GIMPA), University of Mines and Technology (UMaT), University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS), and University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), did not win any medals but were praised for their participation and sportsmanship.

The 28th GUSA Games reaffirmed UCC’s legacy as a powerhouse in university sports while showcasing emerging talent from across the nation.

The event also highlighted the growing diversity and competitiveness of Ghanaian university sports.
