Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ghana, Prof. Nana Aba Appiah Amfo, has been honoured at this year’s GUBA Excellence Awards.
She was the recipient of the Woman of Enlightenment Award at the event organized to celebrate a century of the passage of Yaa Asantewaa, the influential warrior and Queen Mother of Ejisu, who rose to lead an Asante army against the invading British.
The Awards, held in Accra on Monday November 8, was under the theme “Celebrating a Symbol of courage and resilience”
Monday evening's event saw a host of dignitaries and personalities from various countries in attendance.
Organizers of the Award Scheme said Prof. Appiah Amfo was worthy of receiving such honour because of her “courage and resilience as a woman whose work in academia has created knowledge, built confidence and turned barriers to opportunities”
Receiving the award, the Professor of Linguistics encouraged women not to relent in their efforts in making the continent better.
“I dedicate this award to all the courageous and resilient young ladies and girls on this continent and those in the Diaspora of African descent. Yes, we will make it, not in the next generation, but in this generation. Let's keep going. It is our time,” she said.
Prof. Appiah Amfo is the first woman to rise to the office of Vice-Chancellor in the 73-year history of the University of Ghana.
Prior to her appointment, she was the Pro-Vice-Chancellor of the University in charge of Academic and Students Affairs.
She previously also served as the Dean of the School of Languages at the University.
