The University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS) in the Volta Region has committed to international collaboration to enhance human resources in Ghana’s health sector.
It has so far engaged in about 55 international collaborations with universities across the world to build the capacity of faculty and improve the training of students.
Speaking at a ceremony to mark UHAS International Day, the Vice Chancellor, Prof Lydia Aziato announced the latest collaboration with York University in Canada.
She said the partnership would have nine faculty members in Doctor of Philosophy programs and “will straighten our clinical placement issues, which we call the vocational training.”
She added that 4 faculty members would also be benefiting from the Queen Elizabeth Program, where they would engage in a capacity-building program at the University of Alberta in Canada.
She celebrated the contribution of the 25 international faculty members to the success of the University, chalking international awards and recognition within its 12 years of existence.
“I want to emphasize and overemphasize the commitment and benefit and collaboration of our international faculty”, she stressed.
She expressed gratitude to the Chinese government for spearheading and providing funding for the infrastructure development of the University.
“Where we find ourselves on the main campus, is the phase one of the Chinese government support, and then we expect to be handed over the phase two of the edifice that has the biggest stimulating center in the Sub-Region and it is well resourced”, she said.
The Dean of International Faculty, Prof. Elvis Tarkang who is a Cameroonian, lauded the hospitality of Ghanaians and the enabling and fair environment created by UHAS for non-Ghanaian nationals to strive in the campus community.
He outlined that he had played lead roles in the University partnering with about 6 of their counterparts in other African countries, aimed at improving academics and collaborating to enhance the healthcare delivery in the African continent.
A representative for the Ghana Chapter of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organization, Amb. Chief Omobola Precious Akangbe, stressed that “all Africans are one” and hence must continue to collaborate toward the progress of the continent.
