The United Nations is sponsoring a comprehensive disaster response plan for Ghana in the face of the devastation brought on by floods in the three northern regions.
So far only eight deaths have been confirmed, however it is estimated that the death toll could be as high as 20 while about 400,000 have been rendered homeless. The situation has partly been attributed to the lack of a comprehensive plan for disaster management.
To help prevent a recurrence, a six member United Nations disaster assessment and coordination team is in Ghana to help the National Disaster management organization (NADMO) to draw a hazard and vulnerability map for the entire country.
The electronic map which can be accessed by relief agencies worldwide is an alert system designed to trigger the immediate dispatch of relief and also direct evacuation in case of any disaster.
The Greater Accra Regional Coordinator of NADMO, Ben Brown who is touring the country with the team says the hazard and vulnerability map is the first step in putting together Ghana’s comprehensive disaster response plan.
He also says the team will also coordinate the supply of relief items from the various UN agencies for distribution to victims of the floods this week.
