The peace deal brokered between the ruling NDC and opposition NPP in the Odododiodoo constituency of the Greater Accra region does not appear to be giving residents enough surety to register in the ongoing biometric registration exercise.
According to some residents in the constituency, they have received threats from some anonymous persons warning them against allowing persons who do not reside in the constituency to register there.
A concerned resident who pleaded anonymity told Joy News TV’s Emmanuel Anteh that people in the constituency are afraid to register because of the threats.
The NPP’s constituency secretary, Seth Raymond Tettey, confirmed the allegation that threats have been issued to some eligible voters who are yet to register within the Palladium community but noted that some of the cases have been reported to the police.
Mr. Tettey said the Police in the constituency have invited the people who are alleged to have issued the threats.
The Odododiodio constituency secretary of the ruling NDC, Joseph Otoo in a separate interview told Joy News TV calm has been restored after a meeting between the parliamentary candidates for the NDC and NPP, Nii Lantey Vanderpuye and Capt. (Rtd) Victor Okaikoi respectively.
He however stressed there are some issues that still require clarification from the Electoral Commission such as the interpretation of the challenge rules per one’s residency in an electoral area.
Mr. Otoo asked the EC to provide further education on the basis for challenging one’s residential status since that has been the root cause of the violence in the area.
Another resident who also requested anonymity, said residents are unsure what to expect in the final phase of the registration exercise which starts on Thursday.
The Odododiodio constituency has seven [7] electoral areas namely Ngleshi, Mudor, Kinka and Nmlitsa Gonno.
The rest are Korle Woko, Ama momo and Korle Dudor with one hundred and twenty three [123] registration centres.
Only one out of the seven, Korle Dudor, has recorded violence in the constituency with the flash points being at Christ Mboa Kuo, UTC Motor Yard number 1, Railway Yard number 2 and Accra Brewery.
A tour through these centers by the news team revealed low turnout for the third phase of the registration exercise, a development attributed to the challenge procedure at the Tarzan Christ Mboa Kuo in the Korle Dudor electoral area.
The Christ Mboa Kuo registration centre for instance recorded a high turnout of 63 people on the first day of the third phase. The number however reduced to 30 on the second day and 11 on the third day.
