Unilever Ghana has unveiled a new Combined Heat and Power Plant to grow its factory operations.
The plant will enable the company utilize gas as the source of fuel for its factory operations instead of the residual fuel oil and hydro-electric power it currently uses.
The $7 million investment project is expected to improve cost efficiency, provide reliable, stable and quality power supply and make the company’s operation ‘cleaner’ as exhaust from the heat will not be released into the atmosphere.
Speaking at a ceremony to commission the plant, Managing Director of Unilever West Africa David Mureithi called on government to “speed up work in the oil fields to make available natural gas for industrial use in view of the multiple benefits it holds for industry, consumers and indeed socio-economic growth and development.”
The company also held a sustainability summit to engage stakeholders from civil society organizations, the private sector, academia and government to share deliberate actions on Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan introduced at a similar summit last year.
The summit was used to highlight challenges encountered so far by stakeholders and what steps can be taken to influence requisite behavioral change in institutions, homes and communities to reverse such negative trends which are potential threats to the existence of humanity.
