A founding member of the governing New Patriotic Party has said the appointment of Martin Amidu as Special Prosecutor has given him hope the president is truly committed to fighting corruption in Ghana.

Sam Okudzeto said he was worried corruption may not be fought the way he expected it.

“Corruption is such a delicate issue and the kind of machinery you need to check that is not simple. You can say you are relying on the police, but what is their integrity; you can say you are relying on EOCO but what is their integrity…” he said on Upfront on Joy News on Multi TV.

He said to fight corruption, there was the need to have a person with a proven credibility and track record, something Amidu has shown enough of.

I was so elated when this Special Prosecutor was appointed. I have all the confidence that Martin will do his work…That appointment alone has given me hope,” he stated.

Witch-hunting?

The ace lawyer debunked assertion Martin Amidu will embark on a witch-hunting expedition of some political appointees in the former and even current administration.

He said no appointee will entertain fears of prosecution if they did not engage in acts of corruption.

Using himself as an example, Sam Okudzeto said he was arrested by the previous National Democratic Congress (NDC) regime but never once prosecuted for acts of corruption because he never engaged in one.

“There is nothing about witch-hunting in this. If you haven’t done anything wrong, who is going to witch-hunt you," he asked.

The former Bar Association Chairman rather called for Martin Amidu to be fully resourced in his quest to fighting corruption in the country.

Martin Amidu is yet to face Parliamentary vetting in what is expected to be an intriguing encounter with members of the minority in Parliament, some of whom have publicly criticised his appointment.

The citizen vigilante, as he has come to be referred to, following his exploits at the Supreme Court, was named by president Nana Akufo-Addo as the first Special Prosecutor to begin a seven-year tenure in an office created to prosecute corrupt public officials.

Before his appointment, Amidu had single-handedly and as a private citizen won a controversial judgment debt case against businessman Alfred Woyome.
