Leaders of the Youth for Action Group, a group in the Volta Region which is up in arms with the Regional Minister over the level of development in the area are running for cover after they were allegedly threatened and intimidated by Police. The group claims to be part of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) in the Volta Region but the Regional Minister Joseph Amenorwode has said the party does not recognize any such group. Leaders of the group claim the Police, upon instructions from the Minister, want to arrest them for using the letterhead of party in writing to request for protection during a demonstration scheduled to take place on Wednesday. In an interview with Myjoyonline.com, one of the leaders of the group Alhaji Bello, said he and some leading members of the group have had to flee their places of abode to prevent the Police from getting hold of them. He wondered why the Police were bent on disrupting their planned demonstration since they have already sought permission – and even done same in the past using the letterhead in question during the erstwhile Kufuor administration when the youth felt the government at the time had not done enough for the region in terms of development. He alleged that their arrest was just to ensure the demonstration does not see the light of day but vowed that the incensed youth will hit the streets no matter what happens. Alhaji Bello, told Myjoyonline.com that some of his colleagues were on the grounds organising activities to ensure their demonstration takes off on Wednesday. He also accused the Minister and the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of bribing the management of most hotels and radio stations in the region to prevent the group from holding a press conference to state their grievances. The youth leader challenged the Minister as well as the MCE to allow the youth go on with their demonstration if indeed they believe they are innocent of the accusations levelled against them and allow the public to judge. Meanwhile during discussions on Peace FM’s current affairs show Kokrokoo Tuesday, the Deputy Communications Director of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr Samuel Awuku, charged the youth to carry on with their demands and not to allow themselves to be intimidated. He however noted that the direction in which they had channeled their concern - to the Minister- was wrong since it was President Mills himself who promised to develop the region when voted into power. Mr Awuku asked the youth to direct their attention to the presidency and hold the President and his vice to their promises instead of attacking the regional minister and the MCE.
