The West African Examination Council says it is disappointed in the police for failing to prosecute an officer and two others who were caught leaking examination papers to BECE students at Asiwa in the Ashanti region a year ago.

Head of WAEC, Rev. Samuel Ollennu, is worried the tardy response of the police could have consequences as the country begins another BECE examination today.

A June 2014 police investigative report cited by Joy News' Kwetey Nartey said Lance Corporal Prince Opoku, who was stationed at Asiwa was detailed to escort the BECE materials from Konongo depot to examination centres at Asiwa on June 16, 2014.

But the police officer was said to have arranged with an educationist and school proprietor Frederick Addai who promised to pay the officer 5,000 cedis.

A 4,000 cedis initial payment was made, the investigative report said.

The following day when the examination papers were being conveyed to their destinations, Corporal Opoku conspired with Kingsley Isaac Aidoo, a supervisor and Obed Opoku, a driver, all of whom agreed to tamper with the examination.

On their way to deliver the examination papers, the police officer opened the seal and took shots of the examination questions and distributed them via whatsapp.

The questions were later leaked on facebook. Several suspects were arrested in connection with the leakage.

The investigation further indicated that suspects Frederick Addai and Kingsley Isaac Aidoo admitted the crime in their own written statement with both implicating Prince Opoku.

Despite these revelations, Rev Ollenu expressed shock that nobody has been prosecuted for that crime.

He was particularly worried that the failure to prosecute the culprits could have dire consequences as the nation prepares for another examination.

It could embolden other miscreants to engage in examination malpractice, he explained.
