With barely two weeks to Ghana’s general election, the ruling New Patriotic Party is promising free nursery education for wards of all head porters, known popularly as 'Kayayes'.
National Women’s Organizer of the party, Kate Gyamfua, says the NPP is on course in delivering all promises made to the group prior to the 2016 election.
She was speaking at the NPP’s official campaign launch targeted at head porters in Kumasi.
The campaign dubbed 'Kayaye for Nana' is to support President Akufo-Addo to retain power.
In 2016, then candidate Akufo-Addo promised to abort levying of the 'Kayayes', which he honoured when he took office.
Madam Gyamfua is therefore asking the head potters to believe in the NPP, assuring the party remains committed to wean them from hardship.
“Nana promised them, and they themselves concede that he has delivered all the promises he made to them. Now, no kayaye is paying ticket in this country and all their levies have been cancelled.
“Again, he is building a hostel for them which we have begun, we are also putting up a nursery for their children and it is also ongoing. We are asking them to continue with their support for Nana Addo,” she said.
National President of the Kayaye Association, Hajia Adiza Zongo Pioneer, accused the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) of using NPP’s own campaign slogan, “Four More for Nana” to divert the attention of ignorant electorates.
She sensitized the electorate on Nana Akufo-Addo’s number one position on the ballot paper.
“We 'kayayes' are very grateful people, we will not disappoint the government and as a representative for all 'kayayes' in the country. I want to promise Nana Addo that we will ensure he is retained.
“When you receive your ballot paper, make sure you vote number one and don’t allow NDC to deceive you that Nana Addo is number four, it’s a lie.
“I know we have benefited a lot from this government, many of the kayayes have been recruited into various government job opportunities through both the first and the second ladies as well as the chief of staff,” she said.
As part of the launch, Chairman of the male head potters in Ashanti region, Abdul Aminu Raman, received a motorbike to help monitor the activities of members.
