The National Cathedral Scretariat says it is very much aware of the numerous attempts by the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) to politicise and cause disaffection for the National Cathedral project through fabrications and outright lies.
According to the secretariat, this had informed their earlier decision to reject a motion for the complete cessation of work on the National Cathedral project proposed by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba.
In a statement following the resignation of the two clergymen, the secretariat explained that had they admitted the motion, it would have led to a further politicisation of the project.
The secretariat noted that it is well aware of the politicization of the National Cathedral project and how it can be weaponised to create divisions in the board.
It stated that, it if for this reason that the secretariat is unrelenting in its quest to keep the project running despite calls for them to stop work.
The secretariat, however, stressed that the National Cathedral is being built with integrity and the board is committed to accountability.
“We are working closely with the auditors to ensure that they complete the work, which will be shared with the general public,” it added.
Meanwhile, the secretariat has described as false the claim by Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams and Reverend Eastwood Anaba that they were not furnished with any information on the National Cathedral's audit process.
This was after the Founder and General Overseer of United Denominations of Action Chapel Churches Worldwide, Archbishop Nicholas Duncan-Williams, and President of Eastwood Anaba Ministries, Rev. Eastwood Anaba tendered their resignations from the Board of Trustees overseeing the construction of the National Cathedral.
In a joint statement released by Archbishop Duncan-Williams and Rev. Anaba, they clarified that their decision to step down stems from the government's failure to appoint an independent accounting firm to conduct a comprehensive audit of all public funds contributed to the National Cathedral.
However, reacting to the statement, the secretariat said international audit firm, Deloitte was tasked to conduct the audit of which both former board members were well aware of.
“Both Archbishop Duncan Williams and Rev Eastwood Anaba fully participated (by zoom) in an emergency meeting the next day, 24th January2023, to develop a press release on the issue. The press release included information on the audit, which was to be conducted by international audit firm, Deloitte.”
The secretariat added that following the engagement of Deloitte to begin the audit, the board including the two former members had been kept informed of all progress.
“The Board was constantly updated on the process through the Chairman and the Steering Committee, as well as the Executive Director’s reports to the meetings of the Board.”
