Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Vice Presidential Candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), expressed disappointment on Tuesday at the manner in which the National Democratic Congress (NDC) allegedly rigged the 2012 general elections and thereby denied his party victory.
He said that by committing fraud, the NDC had undermined the democratic credentials of the country.
Addressing party members in Accra, Dr. Bawumia said that the NPP would do everything within its power to ensure that the people’s true verdict is declared.
He said that by the party’s estimate, the NDC stole over 100,000 from about 28 constituencies and called for proper investigations to ascertain the truth of the matter.
He said the last few days have been a sad period in the party’s history and that the party’s National Executive Committee had decided to petition the Supreme Court on the matter.
NPP General Secretary Kwadwo Owusu-Afriyie said that the party would not allow anyone to cheat and had begun the process of taking the case to court.
He said that although party members had received credible information that National Security and Police officers had started plotting to arrest party executives, they will not give up until Nana Akufo-Addo is declared president.
Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, Member of Parliament for Assin North, appealed to supporters of the party not to take the law into their own hands through violence.
He said the party worked very hard and should have won the elections, adding that it was very sad that things had turned out as they did and pledged to continue protesting until Mr. Akufo-Addo is declared the winner of the elections.
Others addressing the gathering includes former Greater Accra Regional Minister Sheikh IC Quaye, Dome-Kwabenya MP-elect Adwoa Sarfo, National Women’s Organiser Otiko Afisah Djaba, Third Vice Chairperson Sophia Horner-Sam, Former Attorney-General and Minister of Justice Joe Ghartey, and Anthony Karbo, a former NPP Youth Organiser.
