The Communications Officer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi has said they are not discouraged by the Electoral Commission’s (EC) decision to compile the new voters’ register despite the party’s objection.
He said political parties who oppose the compilation of a new register have been engaging Ghanaians and the consensus is that the EC’s upcoming venture is a needless one.
Speaking ahead of a demonstration in Kumasi against the decision, Mr. Gyamfi said Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register remains unconvinced by the EC’s justifications for the new register.
However, the electoral governing body continues its stakeholder engagement and justification for the register unabated.
According to the Electoral Commission, the current registry is deficient and ‘over-stretched’ hence the need for a new register ahead of the upcoming elections.
Other challenges with the current system are that it “was not able to support the current and future demands of the Commission.”
The EC says to address these challenges it must use upgraded technology to compile a new register.
While some political parties, including the governing New Patriotic Party [NPP] have expressed support for the EC, some 18 Civil Society Organisations [CSOs] have backed the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register.
Meanwhile, police in the Ashanti Region has reassured residents of security as the Inter-Party Resistance Against New Voters’ Register takes their demonstration to Kumasi Tuesday.
The law enforcers say they will ensure that the agreed-upon route for the protest march is adhered to.
“No burning of lorry tires or harassment of by-standers or hawkers will be tolerated throughout the entire event,” the police announced.
