The President of the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association, Perpetual Ofori-Ampofo, has called for a review of the Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) structure.
Contributing to a discourse on pension reforms on JoyNews' National Dialogue on July 25, 2024, she highlighted concerns about SSNIT's investments not benefiting workers adequately.
Madam Ofori-Ampofo pointed out that some private pension schemes are performing significantly better, with assets around 38 billion cedis compared to SSNIT's 18 billion. She said this discrepancy "indicates a fundamental issue" that needs to be addressed.

“As nurses and midwives, the issue of pensions is important to us, therefore when we listen or find ourselves in a situation when it comes to SSNIT and the way it is operating and all of that, it is a source of concern and a worry for everyone,” she stated.
Ofori-Ampofo urged all workers, both in the private and government sectors, to take their pensions seriously, emphasizing SSNIT's critical role in securing their future.
“By the time you are retiring, the energy is down and you may not be able to work more, you have a number of non-communicable diseases afflicting you so it is important that we get the issues of our pensions right,” she added.
