A member of the communication team of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fred Agbenyo says the youth are ‘battle-ready' to face anyone who decides to derail the ruling party’s chances to retain power.
“The young men and women who see themselves as shareholders of the party will protect the institution called NDC at the peril of their lives. Loyalty is very crucial if any group of people is to succeed,” he maintained.
Agbenyo outburst comes at the back of recent threats by former first lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings to ban the NDC from using the umbrella logo which is registered in her name.
Mrs. Rawlings in a letter through her lawyer accused the current leadership of the NDC of veering off the probity, accountability and social justice principles on which the NDC was formed.
But Fred Agbenyo believes Mrs. Rawlings’ claim of ownership of the party’s logo seven months to an election is ill-timed.
He was contributing to a panel discussion on the issue on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Tuesday.
According to him, the tussle over the ruling party's logo will further deepen the rift between the former first couple and the NDC, and would as well play to the advantage of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) which he said are keen to unseat the Mills-led administration in December.
Fred Agbenyo wondered whether Mrs. Rawlings knows the consequences of her actions especially on party members at the grassroots who he claimed toiled with their lives to ensure an NDC victory in 2008.
The development in the NDC he said “is touching the heart of most party members who have not benefited materially but believe NDC is the only party to save mother Ghana”.
The NDC youth activist assured members of the party who are disenchanted with the current development to remain resolute and propagate the unprecedented achievements of President John Evans Atta Mills for Ghanaians to retain him in power to deliver the Better Ghana Agenda.
Fred Agbenyo was optimistic the party leadership would resolve the internal wranglings for a united front in the December general elections.
However, the Managing Editor of the Gye Nyame Concord, Alfred Ogbamey, a co-panelist on the programme, faulted the national leadership of the NDC for not being proactive about the action and inactions of the Rawlingses after the Sunyani Congress.
He said the seeming division could affect the electoral fortunes of the NDC if nothing is done to save the situation.
Alfred Ogbame urged the leadership to expedite action to reconcile with the Rawlingses before the December polls.
