President of the Presbyterian Ministers’ Wives Association (PMWA), Mrs. Rosekel Omenyo says it is important for women to receive proper information on breast related diseases such as breast cancer.
She noted it would help to reduce the rate at which women die in the country from the disease.
Speaking at a community breast health promoter’s workshop to educate women on how to deal with issues pertaining to the deadly disease in Accra, Mrs. Omenyo noted the move would help them take immediate action towards early cancer detection.
Fifty participants were selected from the Accra, Volta, Western and Central Presbyteries.
The workshop follows the outcome of the first edition held in May, this year at Kumasi in the Ashanti region.
During that session, 69 Presbyterian Ministers’ Wives were trained by the Breast Care International (BCI) in collaboration with the Peace and Love Hospitals (PLH).
The workshop also offered them the opportunity to act as voluntary promoters who would engage their local congregations and communities to seek breast screening by trained health care professionals.
Organisers said the participants were made to listen to testimonies from breast cancer survivors.
Chief Executive Officer of the Inter-Commercial Impex Limited (ICIL), Nicola Manning said reaching out to communities in such a manner would enhance and improve awareness of breast care.
On her part, Rachael Apoh-Poku, Deputy Minister for Women, Gender and Social Protection observed that since mortality from breast cancer was high in Ghana the workshop would help dispel the myths and misconceptions surrounding the disease.
Dr. Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of the BCI also noted her outfit would continue to partner likeminded organisations to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to individuals and organizations on breast cancer.
She was appreciative of the media in their support to fighting breast cancer in the country.
