The founder of the Woodfield Manor Autism & Special Needs School, Mrs. Cornelia Boateng, has said that with collective responsibilities, children with Autism would get access to quality education and health care that will enable them to live decent lives and equal education. She said this when she delivered her speech at the fundraising dinner dance ceremony held at the Kempinski hotel in Accra on Friday, 11th August 2017, to raise funds for the Autism and Special needs school. Mrs Boateng explained that over the years, the living conditions of children with Autism have improved in the school due to the availability of good conditions and attention given to them. She said with interventions to support individuals with Autism, these children would be able to contribute to development. The school is concerned with under privileged children suffering from Autism to improve their living conditions. The Woodfield Manor Autism School, which is situated at Adenta, Frafraha, in the Greater Accra Region, is specially designed to nurture the potentials of children with Autism, with trained staff who understand the needs of pupils with special need and create awareness by going to the rural areas and advise them to bring their children to school. She mentioned inadequate facilities, negative mindset of children with the condition, and stigmatization as some of the challenges which should be tackled. On his part, Anthony Boateng, Director of Educational Specials Needs of the Ministry of Education, who stood in for the Minister of Education, said, a key aspect of the government of Ghana’s Inclusive Education Policy under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, is to ensure education as a right for all citizens, including all children with special educational needs. He, therefore, called on stakeholders, individuals and corporate bodies to support Woodfield Manor Autism & Special Needs School to enable the school provide all the needed support to children with Autism in the country. Corporate bodies and individuals pledged financial support to the school during the fundraising event.
