The Youth Employment Agency (YEA) has signed a cooperation agreement with the German Development Agency (GIZ) to launch the "Make Fashion Inclusive" program.

This innovative initiative aims to empower Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) by providing them with skills training and economic opportunities within Ghana's fashion industry.

During the signing ceremony, YEA CEO, Mr. Kofi Baah Agyepong, highlighted the agency's ongoing commitment to supporting PWDs, noting the establishment of Disability Desks in all 266 YEA offices nationwide and the recruitment of 282 PWDs as District Disability Officers.

“This is a new dawn and further growth in the cap of the Agency’s mission to create decent jobs," Mr Agyepong stated.

The "Make Fashion Inclusive" program will focus on providing 50 beneficiaries with extensive training, access to modern resources, and guaranteed markets for their products.

Additionally, a shop will be established to facilitate the sale of the goods produced by these trainees.

This program not only benefits PWDs but also extends to fashion entrepreneurs and start-ups, offering support in areas like skills training, business development, and financial literacy.

Promoting Inclusivity in the Fashion Industry

The initiative represents a collaborative effort to break down barriers and foster inclusivity in Ghana's fashion industry.

By equipping PWDs with the necessary tools, such as modern electric sewing machines and access to a Skills and Fashion Hub, the program ensures that beneficiaries are well-prepared for success.

YEA and GIZ’s partnership goes beyond creating jobs—it aims to transform the fashion industry by promoting inclusivity and enhancing the skills of marginalised communities.

This project is a critical step towards building a more equitable and sustainable fashion sector in Ghana.

GIZ’s Commitment to Inclusive Economic Development

Speaking at the event, Mr. Wilhelm Hugo, Head of the Programme for GIZ’s Special Initiative "Decent Work for a Just Transition," underscored the importance of collaboration and innovation in driving inclusive economic development.

“We want to work together for inclusive economic development… We stand by our ability… We want to create jobs for all citizens, for all persons,” Hugo stated.

The "Make Fashion Inclusive" project is part of a larger two-year initiative that aims to promote sustainable employment and inclusive economic growth. While the project will initially focus on the fashion and textile sector, there are plans to expand its scope to include other industries and participants in the future.
