The NDC parliamentary primaries in the Dome-Kwabenya Constituency recorded one of the shocking results, as Madam Sophia Caren Akuaku beat Mrs. Zita Okaikoi to secure the ticket to represent the party in the 2012 elections.
Madam Sophia Akuaku who was considered a third force prior to the primaries, polled 100 votes to beat 2008 candidate Zita Okaikoi who recorded 83 votes. Mr. Isaac Adamah who was highly tipped to win the contest, managed only 73 votes while another aspirant Isaac Affum managed only a single vote.
The former Information and Tourism Minister Zita Okaikoi had earlier predicted at least 85% victory but that did not come to pass. She however appeared emotionally composed and pledged her support for Madam Sophia Akuako.
Madam Akuaku whom many delegates said is unknown to them, was confident of winning the Dome-Kwabenya seat for the NDC in 2012.
Little was known about Madam Akuaku prior to the elections but she seemed to have done a lot of work underground as was evident in the turnout.
She pledged to work with her competitors and re-unite the NDC in the constituency.
Meanwhile some constituency executives say the NDC would need to put in more effort to market the candidate-elect since she is unknown to the constituency.
Joseph Abrokwah is Propaganda Secretary for the NDC in the Dome-kwabenya Constituency and he told Asempa News’ Jerry Tsatro Mordy that their chances of taking the seat from the NPP have now slimmed, with the election of Madam Akuako as the Parliamentary candidate.
Constituency Chairman Alhaji Abdul Basit earlier told delegates to vote for a candidate who loves and cares for the unity of the party in the area.
He said the party was tired of the divisions that have rocked its rank and file over the years, which has caused its fortunes in the Dome-Kwabenya area.
All four contestants responded positively to the chairman’s call by pledging to work in unity for the interest of the party, irrespective of who won.
