A borehole serving two communities in the Wa West District of the Upper West region has been turned into a refuse dump site raising fear of a major epidemic.
Residents of the communities, Siriyiri and Zanko, both farming communities, are accusing waste management outfit, Zoomlion Ghana Limited for dumping the refuse there.
The residents say persistent attempts to stop the outfit from dumping the refuse there have proved futile.
Joy News’ Upper West regional correspondent, Rafik Salam reported that the borehole which is over three decades old is the main source of drinking water for the community and the disposal of the refuse pose a major health risk to them.
The Upper West regional manager of Zoomlion Emmanuel Vorsuru has meanwhile advised residents of the two communities that while they look for possible ways to resolve the issue, they should look elsewhere for water.
According to Vorsuru: “what we can quickly do now is to prevent our drivers from dumping refuse closer to the borehole. We will find a way of pushing it a bit far away from the borehole.”
District Chief Executive for Wa West Municipality, Nasana N. S. Adamu told Joy News he was aware of the plight of those affected and will address the issue at the next Assembly meeting.
“I will meet with the authorities from the Wa Municipal Assembly so that we will see and faction out a way of curbing an imminent danger that it poses on our people. If it becomes necessary we may have to relocate the dumping site,” he assured.
