Former vice chairman of the Ghana Boxing Authority(GBA) ,Lawyer Peter Zwennes Jnr. has been elected as the new GBA president at the Media Centre of the Accra Stadium Thursday. The Forty eight-year-old legal practitioner polled 56 votes as 35 by hot favourite, Henry Manly-Spain, while businessman Francis Decland obtained four votes. No sooner had Zwennes been adjudged the winner than motley supporters besieged him, spraying powder on him and tying a white calico around his neck. In the vice-presidential race, another shocker saw 58-year-old Reginald Nii Hansen Thompson polling 40 votes to defeat Emmanuel Seth Yoofi Boham who polled 35 votes, while Ahene Truly got 21 votes. Rabbon Dodoo became the second vice-president after being returned unopposed. Zwennes promised to bring all on board to make the GBA a formidable force to regain its position as a top sporting discipline in the country. He was sworn into office together with the other executive members by the Acting Director General, Mrs Alice Attipoe, after reading the oath of office. The two losing presidential candidates conceded defeat and pledged their unflinching support for Zwennes and his administration. Stakeholders trooped to the election centre quite early and before midday the inner rooms and forecourts of the Media Centre was jammed with delegates and supporters of the various candidates. Prior to the election, former GBA president Moses Foh-Amoaning, who supervised the voting, enjoined members to adopt and accept the GBA draft constitution after a brief scrutiny. He entreated all contestants to accept the outcome of the election, while Mrs Alice Attipoe charged members to witness the day’s activity as a watershed in the history of the profession in the country. Other winners on the day included Frederick Ghartey, treasurer, who was returned unopposed; medical practitioner Dr Samuel Armah Quaye, Isaac Kweku Grantson, a boxing administrator from Cape Coast, and boxing promoter, Alhaji Tofik Muritala, all executive members.
