Daily Guide newspaper has reported that 15 Togolese in the Ahanta West District were allowed to take part in the just ended limited voter registration exercise.
The incident which took place at the Bokoro Registration Centre in the Ahanta West District on Monday August 11, was confirmed by Steve Opoku-Mensah, Western Regional Director of the Electoral Commission (EC). He added that the EC official involved would be blacklisted.
Fortunately, EC officials were able to retrieve the identity cards of these Togolese and cancelled their registration.
Steve Opoku-Mensah noted that before an applicant was registered he/she must have provided an old voter's identity card, a driver's licence, a national identification card, a passport or a birth certificate to prove his/her nationality.
He said if the person could not provide any of the above particulars, two guarantors must guarantee his/her registration.
The limited voter registration exercise started on August 4 and ended on Wednesday, August 13.
Daily Guide had earlier published that five Togolese managed to get their names on the voter register in that constituency. These five were part of the fifteen Togolese in question.
They were identified as Kpongnon Yao, 28, Azaindjo Innocent, 22, Augustine Dingninou, 22, Assou-Elikem Arly, 22 and Boko- bosso Atignim, 29.
They were exposed after a leading member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) in the Western Region visited the Bokoro registration centre and alerted the constituency executives of the party about the illegality.
The District Electoral Officer, Nathaniel Quaye, reportedly ordered that the ID cards issued to the Togolese be sent to his office for further investigations.
