The First Deputy Governor of the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Kofi Wampah is to act as Governor when the appointment of Governor Kwesi Amissah-Arthur as the country’s Vice President is approved.
The appointment of the Governor is the prerogative of the President or what is described as a political appointment.
It is however unclear whether the Acting Governor would be confirmed as the Governor or a new person would be appointed to join the two Deputy Governors and how soon.
Dr Henry Kofi Wampah assumed office as the First Deputy Governor in April, 2009. Prior to his appointment, he was the Director of the Research and Statistics Department of the West African Monetary Institute (WAMI).
Dr. Wampah was the Head of the Research Department of Bank of Ghana for five years from February 1996 to February 2001.
He began his career at the Bank of Ghana in September 1986 as a Deputy Manager and served in various capacities to become a Director in 2006.
Whilst still with the Bank of Ghana, Dr. Wampah worked at the International Monetary Fund, Washington, DC as a Special Appointee from May to December 1998, with the Monetary Operations Division of the Monetary and Exchange Affairs Department and the Africa Department.
Dr Wampah holds a Masters' degree and a Ph.D in Economics with specializations in econometrics and public finance from McGill University.
