Police in the Ashanti Region says they will set up a media center to stringently monitor media publications ahead of the 2016 elections.
Police say the center will help deal with persons who make politically inciting comments ahead of general elections in November.
Ashanti Region Police Commander, DCOP Kofi Boakye, revealed this at a meeting with political parties and media houses in the regional capital, Kumasi.
“If anybody should say something on air, let him prove. If you are unable to prove something then you have to go to court and charged with the appropriate offence.
“So we are going to liaise with the AG’s office and other legal luminaries to fashion out the kind of charges that can be applied to all these kinds of offences,” DCOP Boakye said.
He revealed that police have already begun investigations into some cases where political commentators have made unfounded and explosive comments in the media.
The move by the Ashanti Region police is aimed at quelling possible violence before, during and after crucial general elections in November.
“Immediately we hear [someone make an inciting comment] we will be the (radio) station, and when you finish we bring you here, then we ask you questions then we play [your voice] back to you and if you are not able to prove, you go back and tell the world that you lied. That’s another punishment,” he said.
