Government Communications Minister Felix Ofosu Kwakye says the government is moving to implement its 24-hour economy policy, describing it as a game-changing initiative that will revolutionise Ghana’s economy and significantly boost job creation.
Speaking on JoyNews’ AM Show, the minister said the policy was one of the government’s most popular campaign promises and a central pillar of its strategy to address the country’s economic challenges.
“It was the most popular promise. I believe that fixing the economy and the problems we had was, in my view, the number one expectation that we had about this. The 24-hour economy was perhaps the most popular of the promises we made, and it gained wide acceptability,” he said.
Mr Ofosu Kwakye explained that since assuming office, the government has taken concrete steps towards implementing the policy. He noted that one of the President’s earliest actions was the appointment of an adviser on the 24-hour economy, who has been working with a technical team to finalise the policy framework.
“At the moment, steps are being taken to establish a 24-hour authority, which will then have the full mandate of law to implement the programme. About 110 million Ghana cedis has been allocated to facilitate implementation,” he added.
According to the minister, once the framework is completed, the authority will roll out a registration programme for both public and private entities interested in participating, while ensuring that the promised incentives are delivered.
“Then we’ll begin to reap the full benefits of the programme, because it is a game-changer that will revolutionise the economy. It will expand the frontiers of our economy and, more importantly, create jobs. Once you expand the economy, you create more space for the teeming youth of our country who are in search of jobs. And we are excited that this will start pretty soon,” he concluded.
