The Motor Traffic and Transport Unit of the Police Service has disclosed, as many as 246 deaths were recorded in the month of December, 2011 from 1,231 motor crashes.
Head of Education, Research and Training of MTTU, ASP Alexander Kwaku Obeng said 1,731 vehicles were involved in these accidents which saw 1,258 obtaining varying degrees of injuries.
ASP Obeng added that 157 of the crashes were fatal with the majority of accidents caused by human error, particularly reckless driving and lawlessness.
Also, between the short period of December 31, 2011 to 1, January 2012, eight accident deaths were also documented. The same number was recorded same period last year. Pedestrians who were affected by these crashes numbered 209.
ASP Obeng said December 2011 was worse compared to December 2010.
“Accidents happening on the roads have increased by 4.5 percent last year which is not good because more of the road users especially drivers do not heed road rules and regulations,” he said.
ASP Obeng said with such massive numbers, intensive education on road regulations and safety cannot be overemphasized.
He called on all stakeholders including the Ministry of Transport and the National Road Safety Commission, all assemblies to help ensure that road users obey road regulations.
