Three individuals have donated cash to support the surgery of a seven-month old baby diagnosed with hydrocephalus, a life-threatening condition of the brain.
Doctors at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital have scheduled next week for a surgery on little Precious Adusei whose poor young parents are devastated by her condition.
Four thousand, five hundred Ghana cedis have so far been realized from donations, following a report by Nhyira Fm’s Ohemeng Tawiah on the plight of the child.
Little Precious once adored by all and now shunned by many, cries all day with frequent convulsion attacks.
Part of the money has been used to acquire ventriculoperitoneal (VP) shunt. VP is a device used to relieve pressure from the brain caused by fluid accumulation. VP shunting is a surgical procedure that is primarily used to treat a hydrocephalus.
An Accra based businessman, Jerry Owusu and a pharmacist in the Eastern region donated two thousand Ghana cedis each whilst Chief Executive Officer of Young Educators Foundation, Eugenia Tachie-Menson has also donated 500 Ghana cedis.
Doctors at Komfo Anokye hospital can now proceed with surgery which will be carried through Cerebral Spinal Fluid shunting into the abdomen.
Touched by the story of the poor baby, one of the donors, a pharmacist based in the Eastern region challenged the media in Ghana to focus on social issues that have direct bearing on the people.
“The message that the story conveyed, it was as if I was there and seeing all of it. We appreciate the efforts that you put into the story ... it helps everybody” the pharmacist explained.
The pharmacist who pleaded anonymity was at the offices of Nhyira Fm to hand over a cheque for 2000 Ghana cedis to parents of little Precious Adusei.
“It’s exactly what I read in the story. The girl is a very beautiful girl, unfortunately has developed this kind of problem just like it was written in the story. It felt as if I was there and I was experiencing the child’s cries and pains; and the parents distressed in person,” he explained.
Meanwhile, the young parents of the baby are full of praise to donors for the support. They say the donation will go a long way to improve the life of their first child.
