Six people are receiving medical treatment after a violent clash erupted in Kwahu Abetifi in the Eastern Region during an attempt to destool the acting President of the Kwahu Traditional Area, Kwahu Adontenhene Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III.
The incident unfolded when a group of armed men, led by Obaapanyin Yaa Asantewaa, entered the Abetifi Palace, reportedly with the intent to depose the chief.
Yaa Asantewaa, claiming to be the Abrewatia (chief’s wife) of the Kwahu area, arrived at the palace with men believed to be National Security operatives.
This group escorted her into the palace and detained Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III, creating a tense atmosphere within the community.
Once in control of the palace, Yaa Asantewaa allegedly carried out traditional destoolment rites, including the slaughter of a sheep, a symbolic gesture in the ritual to remove a chief.
The detainment and ritual act sent shockwaves through the town, quickly drawing the attention of residents.
As word of the attempted destoolment spread, local youth gathered around the palace, armed with machetes and prepared to defend the acting chief.
The confrontation between the two groups escalated rapidly, resulting in injuries to six individuals.
Fortunately, a timely response from local law enforcement, supported by police and military personnel, managed to restore calm before the situation could deteriorate further.
The security forces dispersed the crowds, and the injured were taken to the hospital for treatment.
In the aftermath, Abetifi’s traditional leaders performed counter-rites to reaffirm Akyemfour Asiedu Agyemang III as the legitimate chief.
The acting President was ceremoniously returned to his position at the main Abetifi Palace, re-establishing his authority in the community.
