We know some of this may sound obvious, but these simple statements can make both of you happier.
1. " You look toned/buff/trim/slim." Has he started to make more of an effort to exercise? Even if he’s showing zero results, a little compliment accompanied by a flirty arm squeeze will encourage him. And we could all use a little of that.
2. "Thank you." A study from the University of California showed that those who feel appreciated by their partners are also more appreciative of their partners—so it goes both ways. The next time your husband does something thoughtful, even if it's as tiny as remembering to put your wet beach towels in the wash instead of on the floor, say "thanks" instead of "Oh, good, you're learning!"
3. Those three little words. That’s right, spelled out in full. Not a quick “ILU” text while you’re out grabbing lunch, a “Love you!” while you’re rushing off the phone, or a kissy face emoji.
4. " I’m proud of you." Especially if the focus has (understandably) shifted to your kids' accomplishments, he'll appreciate the extra validation.
5. "I had a lot of fun last night/this morning/Tuesday..." And to be clear, we mean of the frisky variety. Anything that reminds him that he’s virile will do the trick. Feel free to alter the verbiage so you can text it without blushing.
6. "Ha!" He might not be Louis C.K. funny, but a little giggle goes a long way in the ego department.
7. "I love your [insert body part]." Nothing sexual here, although he probably wouldn't mind that compliment. Hearing he has nice eyes or an adorable butt is just as nice.
8. "Mwah!" All right, technically it's more of the sound you make while smooching than a phrase, but stay with us. A study published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior found that kissing is more important than sex in maintaining a relationship. So keep them coming.
9. "Can you help me figure this not-so-complicated thing out?" Potentially sexist-sounding statement alert: We know you’re more than capable of fixing whatever issue your iPhone is having, but it doesn’t hurt to allocate the task to your husband from time to time. He’ll never tire of feeling smart.
