The Ghana Technoloy University College GTUC) has earmarked this year to start a virtual campus programme, where students would get to meet lecturers online for lectures in the comfort of their homes and offices, instead of congregating in one classroom on campus. President of the University, Dr. Osei K. Darkwa said the virtual campus project is also intended to enroll more students who would be able to study with the university but do not have the time to come and go from campus on daily basis. He was speaking at a Special Congregation of the school at which 72 students passed out with postgraduate Masters Degrees in various disciplines. Dr. Darkwa said: “We want our students to go to school in a virtual environment or on a tablet computer regardless of location. This explains why we introduced the Campus Companion, a tablet computer that provides a new approach to supporting teaching and learning.” He noted that the university has also entered in partnership with a global educational software company called Serosoft to undertake a campus automation project aimed at building a Campus Management System (CMS) to manage university processes and enable the university to measure performance in a timely manner. Dr. Darkwa said the focus of the two projects was to establish a strong virtual rather than physical infrastructure to enable more Ghanaians to have access to the quality education that the university offers in collaboration with its partner universities in Ghana and around the world. He said since the school opened its doors to the public, student population has grown tremendously from under 100 to nealy 4,000 today, adding that this year, the school expects to enroll 3,000 new students. The President said the school would also be embarking on a massive fundraising campaign to raise some $3million to build some physical infrastructure including hostels, an auditorium complex, and a five storey parking lot. He said the school is doing well with teaching, but would be placing more emphases on research this year, adding that it would also introduce new programs of study, which would include Postgraduate Studies in Law, Tourism and a few PHD programs. “We are working with various universities around the world to introduce these courses soon,” he said. One of the top students who passed out, Federick Baidoo expressed the gratitude to the school on behalf of his colleagues, but also urged the school to establish more laboratories for experiment, a facility for students to be able to check their results online, and PHD programmes in all the disciplines to enable students continue their education easily.
