Minister of Water Resources, Works and Housing Alhaji Collins Dauda inaugurated a six-member committee on Wednesday to investigate the alleged importation of expired aluminium sulphate (alum) for water treatment. The move followed media reports this week that the Ghana Urban Water Company (GUWC) was using the expired alum at the Weija Water Treatment Plant. The committee is chaired by Albert A. Ogyiri, the immediate past President of the Ghana Institution of Engineers, while other members include Hawawu Sajifu of the Ghana Revenue Authority, Samuel Kwakye of the Food and Drugs Authority, Frederick Addae, the Director of Water at the Ministry of Water Resources Works and Housing and Geofrey Ahiabli of the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI). The committee has six days to present its report. Alhaji Dauda, who expressed outrage at the media reports, said the law would take its course if officials are found to be responsible for the chemical’s importation. He stated that the government had promised to provide the people of Ghana with safe water and that it would not compromise on that commitment. The minister said the committee is expected to come up with recommendations to help government forestall a recurrence of the problem. The committee is charged with determining if the GUWC imported expired chemicals into the country and whether any of those chemicals have been used for water treatment and as well as bringing to light the circumstances surrounding the procurement of the chemicals, among other things.
