Former Foreign Affairs Minister Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni is likely to abdicate his Kumbugu constituency parliamentary seat again to take up his new job as Secretary-General of African, Caribbean and Pacific States. The Member of Parliament for Kumbungu in the Northern Region has been endorsed by the Economic Commission for West African States (ECOWAS) to serve the unexpired term of Dr. Mohammed Ibn Chambas as General Secretary of the ACP.On December 20, 2012, United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and African Union Commission Chairperson Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma appointed Dr. Ibn Chambas the Joint Special Representative for Darfur and Head of the African Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur (UNAMID).Alhaji Mumuni’s appointment comes just weeks into his third parliamentary term.Alhaji Mohammed Mumuni left parliament in 2004 as MP for Kumbugu to serve as running mate to then-flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress Professor John Evans Atta Mills. He told Joy News on Friday that he will meet with the leadership of Parliament to discuss whether to hold onto the seat or let it go and concentrate on his new job.“The job description has not been disclosed and it is difficult now to say whether the two can cohabit, but clearly when the details have been received, we’ll go into consultation with the leadership of Parliament, with the leadership of my party; the NDC, with government and we’ll try to define the way forward,” he said.Ahead of that, though, he says that in his new job, he will still be serving his country.“I feel very elated, but above all I am humbled by the high level of confidence that has been placed in me by the President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama and his colleagues and brothers, Heads of States and Governments of the ECOWAS region.”
