Students of Kumasi High School in the Ashanti region are calling on the government to help improve their toilet facilities.
Students in an interview with Citi News said the school’s general toilet facility particularly, the one used by male students, is in a deplorable state, making its usage inconvenient.
They added that the toilet is not kept in the best of ways, generating unpleasant odour that particularly affects students of one of the dormitories which close to it.
The students further complained that any time it rains, the unpleasant odour from the toilet worsens and as a result, they do not feel comfortable staying at the dormitory.
Students are of the view that the location of the toilet facility is unsafe, exposing them to snake attacks.
They are thus appealing to the government to help address the challenge.
“Recently, one of us fell at the place because there are no lights. He has been in the hospital for about a month. We have not even heard of him of late. So we are pleading with the government to come and help us with it,” a student appealed.
“When the wind blows, the stench spreads to our class and we don’t feel comfortable,” another student indicated.
The Senior House Master of the school, Asare Boakye Ansah, told Citi News that getting a modern toilet facility would be helpful, but added that in the meantime, measures are being taken to clear the school’s choked toilet.
He added that the school needs help with additional access to water and incinerators to deal with its waste challenges.
“Toilet facilities seem to be very enough because we were having twelve toilets per house but just recently, looking at the numbers again, I think we need to improve upon it so if we get a proper way of building a modern toilet facility. That will go a long way to help the school,” he said.
