The Communications Director for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Sammy Gyamfi, has urged the government to halt the training of illegal armed forces ahead of the 2020 elections.
According to Sammy Gyamfi, the Nana Akufo-Addo-led government has the tendency of unleashing armed forces during elections, as it happened during the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election.
“What we now know as the tendency of this government, is to deploy an armed force, an illegal armed force for purposes of election security. So we are concerned,” he said on Newsfile on Saturday.
Sammy Gyamfi stated that the constitution of Ghana is clear on the role of the Ghana police service in ensuring peace and stability during elections, thus any other armed force being deployed during an election flouts the constitution.
”We’re telling President Akufo-Addo that when it comes to elections our laws are clear. It is only the Ghana police service and none other which is responsible for election security. Let us all play by the rules. Halt these illegal trainings,” he stressed on the current affairs programme.
He added that for security and a free and fair election in 2020, the government should have confidence in the Ghana police service and other national security agencies.
“You’re the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces, for God’s sake have some confidence in the Ghana Police Service, and the military, and the fire service.
"Believe in them that if given the freehand, they can ensure that election 2020 is peaceful,” he told the President.
Sammy Gyamfi made these comments on Newsfile Saturday while submitting his views on the allegation that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) is training some illegal militia ahead of the 2020 elections.
Although the NPP has denied the allegation, Sammy Gyamfi says the claims are true and are backed by facts.
“That wishy-washy half-witted response from the NPP denial will not wash, because these are indisputable facts.”
