Ghana’s Richard Commey has lost his IBF Lightweight title to American boxing sensation, Teofimo Lopez, after suffering a Round 2 technical knockout.
Commey was hit by a powerful right punch from Lopez in 1minute 14 seconds in the second round of the fight at the Madison Square Gardens early Sunday.
Commey, 32, went into the bout as the underdog despite being the defending champion.
Lopez, 22, becomes the 5th youngest world champion since 1984.
As soon as the thrill of Lopez cracking Commey had started to settle just a hair, it also became clear that we had even bigger news: Lopez is looking likely to unify with Vasiliy Lomachenko in April 2020.
Lomachenko-Lopez will be one of the most highly-anticipated fights of next year if/when it comes to pass, as you’re pairing arguably the top pound-for-pound boxer in the game today, a veteran who is small at 135 pounds, against a young powerhouse who is pretty big at 135.
There is a lot of potential for major drama there, and at the very least, Lopez is an incredibly live dog against the living legend.
