Power generation at the seat of government, Jubilee House is to go solar as government’s renewable energy drive takes shape.
The $1.4million project, when completed in June this year, will guarantee solar-powered energy to 60 per cent of the Presidency.
President Akufo-Addo first made the commitment to ensure all state housing property go solar during the state of the nation address in 2019.
Energy Minister John Peter Amewu, who inspected the progress of work, told JoyNews government is on course to achieve the 10% renewable energy in the national mix.
“As a government, we believe in the importance of renewables. We have a target of 10% as a proportion of our energy mix in 2020. We are already behind that schedule. Recently, the Bui Dam was constructed, about 45kW capacity mini-hydro plant, the first of its kind in the country… And it’s also good for Ghana as part of our energy mix,” Mr Amewu said.
The 912kW solar system is undertaken by an indigenous firm, strategic security systems.
Energy Minister Peter Amewu added that other public buildings will soon convert to solar.
“Ministry of Energy has done it already. This is a good demonstration that the Presidency is also running on solar power. We are continuing to encourage Ghanaian households to migrate onto solar panels.
The country, in February 2019 outdoored Ghana Renewable Energy Master Plan to explore and develop the use of various renewable energy sources in the nation.
The plan constitutes an investment-focused framework for the promotion of the country’s rich renewable energy resources to propel economic growth, improve social life and reduce climate change effects.
