Mr Daniel Owusu-Koranteng, Executive Director of Wassa Association of Communities Affected by Mining (WACAM), has appealed to the Government to increase its investment in sports because of the varied benefits that could be derived from that sector.
This, he said, would help the development of structures and skills from the grassroots through the district, regional and to the national level.
Speaking to the Ghana News Agency in Accra on Tuesday, Mr Owusu-Koranteng, who described himself as a sports enthusiast, said since the First Republic when there was the mass sports policy, not much had been done to promote sporting activities.
He said it was only recently that the Government embarked on the rehabilitation and construction of the four stadiums for the Ghana 2008 African Cup of Nations tournament, adding that the initiative should be continued to cover other regional and district capitals.
He said there was the need to place emphasis on the organization of colts teams at all levels and promote inter collegiate sporting activities, which would pave the way for the grooming and selection of talents for national teams.
In this regard, Mr Owusu-Koranteng said, since the present crop of players would grow old eventually, it must be seen as a matter of national interest for Government to invest the children.
He also said the National Sports Council (NSC) must be resourced to employ coaches for the districts to develop and train young and adult sportsmen and sports women nationwide.
Mr Owusu-Koranteng, said the District Assemblies must also support in that direction because of the multiple benefits that it would give to the districts.
He commended the national soccer team, the Black Stars for their brilliant performance so far during the Ghana 2008 championship.GNA.
