The C.K. Mann Charity Foundation, a non-governmental organisation in Takoradi committed to the promotion of education in the fishing communities, has organised a mock examination for 168 students in two junior high schools (JHS) in the Shama District of the Western Region. The schools are Shama Catholic JHS and the Aboadze/Abuesi MIA JHS. They wrote English, Mathematics and Integrated Science. The move was intended to adequately prepare the minds of the students before taking the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), which is in progress. Speaking to the media after a visit to the school, the founder of the C.K. Mann Charity Foundation, Mr C.K. Mann, noted that the BECE results in the two schools had consistently improved in the past two years. He explained that although the mock examination was not organised in time, it was to help the teachers to discuss and solve similar questions that the students would meet in the BECE. He pointed out that the organisation, which was established about three years ago, was taking care of the educational needs of 56 students from the primary to the senior high school level in Aboadze, Abuesi and Shama. Currently, he said, 20 of these children were in their final year at the JHS level. He added that the exercise, the first of its kind, was going to continue in the subsequent years. Mr Mann commended the Takoradi port of the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) for their support and urged other corporate organisations to support the foundation, adding that "we want all children especially children in the fishing communities, to have access to education. The Headmaster of Shama Catholic JHS, Mr John Essel, said the step taken by the foundation was in the right direction. "Organising such examinations would boost the morale of the students and encourage them to take their studies seriously," he said. Source: Daily Graphic
