The Committee for joint action (CJA) says Members of Parliament who approve the controversial sale of Ghana Telecom to Vodafone, stand the risk of losing their seats.
A spokes person for the group Mr. Kwesi Pratt insists the CJA will actively campaign against those MPs in the upcoming presidential and parliamentary elections.
“The parliamentarians can only retain their seats if they do our bidding. If they succumb to partisan pressure, or through corrupt practices, vote for this agreement those parliamentarians no matter what party they belong to should understand that the rest of us will campaign massively against them.”
At a press conference held in Accra on Thursday, the group threatened to mobilize mass support against the sale of GT.
Samuel Okudjeto Ablakwa a member of the group said “the CJA is committed to organize mass mobilization to reverse this obnoxious deal and shall continue the agitation until the deal is revoked”
He said the group will hold public fora across the country to generate public discussion about the dangers involved in selling 70% shares in the company, and would resort to demonstrations should the government still go ahead with the deal.
The group accused government of wrongfully using state resources in the organisation of national awards, purchasing of presidential jets and the building of a presidential palace, but could not raise money to offset debts incurred by GT.
In a swift rebuttal to the CJA claims, the Deputy Minister of Communication. Mr. Fred Opare Ansah said the sale of GT had nothing to do with the debts incurred by the company, or poor management.
He contends the sale is to raise standards of the company in what has become a competitive telecommunication industry in the country.
In a telephone interview with Joy FM’s Matilda Asante on Thursday, the minister claim the move is to ensure that GT becomes the market leader in the telecommunication industry in the country.
He further accused opposition members of putting false information about Vodafone in the public domain to generate mass disapproval for the sale.
