With just a day to go for the opening of the voter’s register, the national Democratic Congress has raised doubts about the efficiency and success of the exercise. The party says the EC has failed to address the numerous concerns it raised, and that could negatively affect the registration exercise. According to the EC, an estimated number of 600-1,000,000 prospective voters will be registered within 2,500 working stations for the 11 days exercise. But this has not gone down well with the NDC. At a press conference held in Accra on Wednesday, National Organiser of the party Samuel Ofosu Ampofo said the number of working stations is not enough for the exercise and could disenfranchise prospective voters. “If the EC claims government had provided all the funds it needed for the exercise, why should there be only 2500 working stations.” Mr Ampofo expressed regrets over what they refer to as political considerations inherent in previous exercises. “The practice where less registration materials were sent to strong holds of the NDC, and extra materials sent to strong holds of the NPP will not be countenanced,” he said. But Chairman of the EC Dr. Afari Gyan said he does not want to engage in needless arguments with any body. “In our professional opinion, the 2,500 working stations were more than enough for the exercise.” he maintained. In an interview with Joy FM's Dzifa Bampoe on Wednesday, Afari Gyan said an estimated number of 40 people will be captured in each station in 10 days, and would not disenfranchise any body. He dismissed claims by the NDC that the EC had under supplied registration materials to some selected areas saying, it never happened in the past and will not happen now.
