Members of Parliament have been recalled from recess “to consider outstanding and any other Parliamentary business.
An advertiser’s announcement carried by the Daily Guide of Saturday, August 2, 2008 quotes the Speaker of Parliament as the source of the recall notice.
“In exercise of the power conferred on the Speaker by Standing Order 42(3) of the Parliament of Ghana, I, Right Honoring Ebenezer Begyina Sekyi Hughes, Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, do hereby direct that the Parliament of Ghana shall, notwithstanding anything to the contrary, be recalled from the recess to sit on Tuesday, the 12th day of August…”
The recall has largely been expected following the house’s inability to conclude its consideration of the Ghana Telecom sale and purchase arrangement for UK-based Vodafone to acquire 70 percent of GT shares for 900 million dollars.
The house is sharply divided over the value the nation stands to benefit from the sale, with the New Patriotic Party members explaining the Vodafone deal is the best for the nation, while the National Democratic Congress members call the amount a pittance.
Some others, including pressure groups outside the house have rejected the very idea of selling shares in the company, arguing that the national asset must be salvaged and protected from any foreign interest.
