The Executive Director of Child’s Rights International, Bright Appiah has condemned political parties who bus under-aged children to polling stations with the aim of getting them registered in the ongoing voter registration exercise.
According to him the issue if not put in check will deprive children of their basic rights.
Bright Appiah condemned the act in an interview on Adom Dwaso Nsem on Monday.
He said if such children are allowed to register they will be exposed to many dangers which will be detrimental to their well-being.
Mr. Appiah cited an instance where the courts were unable to pass judgment in a defilement case, when the accused person insisted that the victim was not a minor but an adult because he had seen her vote in an election.
The child rights advocate said this instance among others infringe the rights of children as enshrined in the Children’s Act.
Meanwhile the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Kwadwo Afari Djan, on the same platform condemned the violence that has bedevilled the registration exercise.
He said politicians are to blame for the distractions in the exercise because they are those bussing people including minors to the registration centres.
He also warned that the EC is prepared to take drastic measures to ensure the success of the voter registration exercise.
He said the EC is not prepared to put the life of its officials in danger and therefore cautioned that some registration centres will be closed down if the Commission satisfies itself that those places are not safe.
