Former Scottish Ring King, Evan Armstrong rolled back the years when he dropped by the training camp of the Ghana Amateur Boxing Team, the Black Bombers this week.

Evan Armstrong born in Ayr was a 60s and 70s Scottish professional bantam, feather, super feather weight champion.

The Black Bombers are using Ayr as their base ahead of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow and were sparring at the town’s Wossobama Gym when Armstrong paid them a surprise visit.

And they were thrilled to meet Evan, who famously won the Commonwealth Featherweight title in 1974.

Ironically, he went on to lose the belt to Ghanaian, David Kotey on 7^th December that year in Accra.

Following his visit to the Ghanaian team, the ‘’Ayrshire Post” wrote a story with the caption, “Evan rolls back the years in the gym.”

Ghana, who will be participating in ten sporting disciplines in Glasgow 2014, are being accommodated at Mercure Hotels, a 3- Star hotel with 70 outlets in the UK and 700 hotels worldwide.

Located in the heart of Scotland’s Burn’s Country, the Hotel has 118 modern guest rooms with many rooms overlooking the seafront. Lunch and super are provided by a Ghanaian Chef and crew.

Team Ghana have been in South Ayrshire since the first week of July and have been using the town’s sports facilities to prepare for the Games.

The head coach of the Black Bombers, Ofori Asare is impressed with the level of organisation of the pre games.

“The organisation has been good. The facilities, accommodation and feeding has been excellent. We have the opportunity to train in two different gyms at Coylton and Wosso Boxing Gym. We have been working out not only in the gyms, but also working on our discipline in terms of being punctual for our daily routines”, he said.

Ghana will be represented by seven boxers at the Games: Sulemanu Tetteh (Light Flyweight), Abdul Wahib Omar(Flyweight), Jessie Lartey (Lightweight), Musah Raman Lawson(Light Welterweight), Azumah Mohammed (Welterweight), David Bawah (Light Heavyweight) and Osumanu Haruna (Super Heavyweight).

“We have been not been to any international competition since the Olympic Games in London in 2012. It’s been mainly local competitions. Our boxers have the experience but lack exposure and competition. We won a bronze medal each at the 2006 and 2010 Commonwealth Games. We hope to go further this time,” he concluded.
