Eddie Annan resigns as Korle-Bu Board Chair

Myjoyonline.com has learnt that Board chairman for the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital, Mr. Eddie Annan has resigned.

Mr. Annan’s resignation follows the dismissal of acting Chief Executive, Rev. Albert Okpoti Botchwey, Thursday.

Mr. Annan's resignation was contained in a letter addressed to president John Mahama on Friday, May 25, 2014.

While bowing out in peace, Mr Annan alleged the existence of a "money making bloc" at the facility and urged the president to consider investigating.

The letter claimed: “There are financial and infrastructural challenges at Korle-Bu but your main challenge, President, will be to dismantle what seems to be a ‘mafia’ operating at the hospital that is generating wealth to some staff and associates at Korle-Bu".

“When you talk to the average Korle-Bu worker on a calm day, he will tell you the truth which they are all aware of- these are money making blocks that seriously resist being dismantled,”

“If you manage to clean up Korle-Bu during your Presidency, you would have done a great service to the nation. I encourage you Mr. President to set your face as a flint and unravel the seeming mysteries which are compounded by collusion from sources you least expect. I recommend your National Security Coordinator takes on this fight from a proper perspective and helps you in this quest,” the letter suggested.

The Senior Staff Association of the hospital have been battling management and the board following their decision to use internally generated funds to purchase luxurious vehicles for top management staff.

Immediate-past Health Minister ordered the vehicles be returned and directed the acting CEO to step aside. Her successor, Dr. Kwaku Agyeman Mensah however reversed the decision only to be followed by a statement from the presidency announcing the dismissal of Rev. Okpoti Botchwey.

Established on October 9, 1923, the Korle Bu Teaching is the premier health care facility in Ghana. It is the only tertiary hospital in the southern part of Ghana.

It is a teaching hospital affiliated with the medical school of the University of Ghana. Three centres of excellence, the National Cardiothoracic Centre, the National Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery and the Radiotherapy Centre are all part of it.

The hospital has grown from an initial 200 bed capacity to 2,000. It is currently the third largest hospital in Africa and the leading national referral centre in Ghana.
