Even before a 97 page policy document on the National Economic Forum will be implemented, the Director of Communications for the Convention Peoples Party says nothing will change in Ghana's troubled economy, even if the report were fully implemented.
Nii Armah Akomfrah says the Senchi report which is a by-product of a three day economic dialogue by some of the best economic brains in the country is nothing but a regurgitation of the same old failed policies.
Mr Akomfrah was speaking on Joy FM”™s news analysis programme, Newsfile, Saturday.
The Economic forum was organised at Senchi in the Eastern Region at the behest of the president John Mahama to find lasting solution to the dire economic challenges facing the country.
A 22 point communiqué was issued at the close of the forum with a promise to issue a detailed policy programme and plan of action two weeks later.
After several weeks of delay, the report was finally presented to the president by the vice president, Paa Kwesi Amissah Arthur later this week.
The report is a detailed document on measures to be taken to arrest the unsustainable budget deficit, depreciation of cedi, high inflation and other key macro and micro economic indices.
President John Mahama has vowed to follow through with the implementation of the report in the hope of solving some of the economic challenges facing the country.
But Nii Armah Akomfrah is not impressed with the document. He said the document is only a rehash of failed policies by the government.
“What is really the new substance in there?” he asked rhetorically, adding, “I don't see anything new to transform the economy.”
He said a forum that did not take into consideration Ghana”™s economic trajectory over the last 30 years is bound to fail because the alternatives suggested may be ad-hoc and not based on any empirical scientific analysis.
As a result “we have come to the same conclusion” and “arrived at the same failed path” he chided.
