The National Democratic Congress Member of Parliament for the Jomoro constituency has lauded the US-Ghana government initiative to train personnel for the oil industry, but says students in his constituency must be given the priority. “We want government to assist, whilst training other people to train more of our people to benefit from the resources in our area.” Earlier this week, the US government promised to offer scholarships package to 100 Ghanaians to train in the petrol-chemical industry, to facilitate the smooth administration of the emerging oil industry in the country. The programme which will be conducted at the masters degree level in three universities in US will begin next year. Mr. Lee Ocran whose constituency falls within the area of the oil find, says a percentage must be reserved for his people. In an interview with Joy news Mr Lee Ocran bemoaned the practice where indigenes from communities endowed with natural resources are deprived of their livelihood. “Only few people benefited from the mining industry in Tarkwa where I grew up, and we don’t want this to happen in our area,” he stressed.
