Former President Jerry Rawlings has accused the ruling New Patriotic Party administration of being behind some recent high-profile murders in the country. He said the government, for example, was behind the murder on June 28, 2006, of the Deputy Managing Director of the Ghana Commercial Bank, Rokko Frimpong at his Community 18 residence at Tema. Five persons have since been arrested in connection with the murder. Rawlings, addressing National Democratic Congress supporters in Accra on Thursday, said the government was also illegally and deliberately distributing arms to the populace all over the country because the NPP knows it would lose the December elections. He urged the party’s supporters to vote out the NPP for failing to provide Ghanaians the peace and development they desire. Rawlings said what he spoke was the truth and he should not be doubted. “Why are they killing people, killing people here? They killed the Commercial Bank Manager before the demonetization exercise. Did you know they even killed a senior officer a night or two before because the rounded up all the security subordinates and warned them about something…? So today, if I now want to remind you about the killings that they have been involved in, you still want to doubt me?” Rawlings asked his audience who responded with a thumping “No!” He urged President Kufuor to return home from his foreign trips to provide some comfort for the people. [You can listen to former President Rawlings in the attached audio.] But Deputy Information Minister, Frank Agyekum told Joy News the ex-president's allegations are laughable and beat the imagination. He said he found it difficult to draw a correlation between Rokko's murder and the demonetization exercise, unless Rawlings would justify the wild claims.
