The Deputy Minister of Food and Agriculture and Member of Parliament for Tano South Dr. Hannah Bissiw has lashed out at Daily Guide for publishing as its front page story, a birthday party organized by her husband to celebrate her and their son on August 2, 2014.
Speaking on Adom FMs Dwaso Nsem, Tuesday, the Minister said she sees no relevance in the use of a birthday party as a front page story of the paper, when there are more pressing issues to be discussed.
The Daily Guide newspaper on Tuesday 5 August published details of the birthday party and a Toyota Land Cruiser gift presented to the Minister during the celebrations with the headline “Money Swine! Toyota Land Cruiser for Hannah Bissiw B’day”.
According to the publication Hannah Bissiw’s actual birthday fell on Wednesday, July 23, 2014 but the celebration was deferred till Saturday, August 2 2014.
The paper also stated that the “lavish party took place at a time President Mahama was in the United States of America (USA) begging for a financial bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to save the Ghanaian economy from collapsing totally”.
It said “the highest point of the celebration was the presentation of a brand new (tear rubber) 4×4 Toyota Land Cruiser Prado 2014 model estimated to cost $120,000 by her husband Dr. Francis Kpormego, a medical doctor based in Jamaica with Good Shepherd Medical Complex”.
However the Minister in reaction to the story said her husband was well to do and can afford to buy her anything he desires.
She recalled how she received phone calls from unknown persons making uncomplimentary remarks about her following the paper's publication of photos of her carrying a pregnancy.
She said the attitude of the paper was inappropriate adding that her name and private life should not be used as a means to make money.
However in response to her comments Fortune Alimi, Editor of the Daily Guide said Dr. Bissiw is a public figure and “as a public figure there is a thin line between her private and public life”.
Fortune added, the fact that the party was also held at a public place, prevents her from claiming that her private life has been intruded.
"She should forget about her private life” he said, adding that the Dr. Bisiw should be thankful for the publicity.
